AGREST Conference Highlights Digital Innovations for African Agriculture

The Agricultural Economics Society of Tanzania (AGREST) held its 16th scientific conference and annual meeting on November 7th and 8th, 2024, at the Kingsway Hotel. The theme of the conference was “Leveraging Digital Innovations for Sustainable Agriculture and Agribusiness Growth in Africa.”

The meeting attracted a diverse audience, including scholars, researchers, policymakers, bankers, and other stakeholders. Mr. Samuel Mshote, Director General of Tanzania Fertilizer Company Limited (TFC), delivered the keynote address, while Ms. Isabela Maganga, Managing Director of Equity Bank Tanzania, served as the guest speaker.

The AGREST Chairperson opened the ceremony. Following this, Dr. Florens Turuka delivered a compelling keynote address emphasizing the critical role of integrating digital technologies into agriculture. He highlighted how digital tools can address challenges like production inefficiencies, supply chain disruptions, and limited market access. Dr. Turuka stressed the importance of technology in guiding farmers on fertilizer use, irrigation timing, and disease identification, ultimately reducing guesswork.

The Annual General Meeting reviewed AGREST’s activities, financial reports, and strategic plans. Key discussions focused on enhancing member participation and aligning the society’s goals with emerging digital trends in agriculture.

The paper presentations were divided into three parts:

  • Part A: Digital Technologies and Socio-Economic Strategies for Agricultural Challenges: This session explored how digital technologies and socio-economic strategies can tackle key challenges faced in agriculture and agribusiness. The focus was on innovative solutions to improve productivity, financial inclusion, and sustainability for smallholder farmers.
  • Part B: Innovative Practices, Challenges, and Policy Considerations for Agricultural Growth: This session addressed diverse topics related to agricultural productivity, commercialization, and sustainability, including organic practices, crop insurance, and value chain dynamics.
  • Part C: Governance Structures, Value Chains, Food Loss Reduction, and Financing Innovation in Agriculture: This session highlighted structural, organizational, and financial factors critical to improving agricultural efficiency, reducing food waste, and enhancing market participation.
