Research focus (interest) and Specialization

In 2013 – 2016, being sponsored by African Union, uunder Mwalimu Nyerere Scholarship Programme, he conducted a research project titled,  “Chicken Feed Formulation at Farm Level in Ajmer District of Rajasthan”, Ajmer, being a Semi – Arid District of Rajasthan State of India. The main focus of the project was application of locally available technology and  feed ingredients such as pearl millet, sunflower cake, groundnut cake, soya beans cake, mustard cake and maize in the formulation of least cost, but nutritionally balanced chicken feed, to promote the chicken and livestock sector at large which is the best alternative to crop production in semi arid areas. The results of the study revealed that on-farm formulation of chicken feeds reduces feeding costs by 25%.  Within the same period, he was involved in the agricultural price forecasting project sponsored by the Indian Council of Agricultural Research (ICAR). The project was dealing with linking farmers to both domestic and international markets. The crops targeted were pearl millet, groundnuts and guar. While in India, he was also involved in empowering chicken keepers through farmers’ group formation to increase their bargaining power in marketing of chicken products. In 2016 Dr. Longo participated in a short course on Commodity and Futures Markets (CFM) organized by the National Institute of Agricultural Marketing (NIAM) in Jaipur, India.   In 2017, he  participated in a DANIDA funded project called  Building Strong Universities Phase II (BSU II), where he conducted a research in Dodoma and Dar es Salaam titled, “Awareness and Compliance with Feed Quality Standards; the Case of Chicken Feeds in Tanzania”. He is currently involved in desk review on a research project titled, “Sunflower Value Chain in Tanzania”. The research is sponsored by BSU III project, under DANIDA funding. The desk review is expected to produce a research proposal that will investigate the effectiveness of sunflower oil extraction technologies that are employed in Tanzania.
